Here is where it all began. A quick street car
in search of going a little faster. Ya right, probably heard that one before
huh...
Well, with a bolt on 302, (Cam, Heads, Intake,
Exhaust, Gears, etc), Alan just wasn't happy with the stang being a quick 13 sec
ride on street tires. (Keep in mind we're at 4800 ft elevation here in the high
desert)
In search of the elusive 12 sec timeslip, he
started a budget 351 swap. As you can see from these pics, nothing crazy, just
ARP hardware and a good forged piston upgrade from the stock rotating assembly.
No balance work, no custom girdle, just plain old windsor power! (Pics are of
the 351 after we pulled it once we had a 10 sec slip in hand)

Not even a girdle!

With a little hard work, in went the 351 once
the long block was finished.

Now with a little help from the 351, it was
track time again!

Easy 12's All Day Long! But as you probably
already guessed, 12's got old just about as quick as a 1-2 shift. So what to do
when you work at THR??? ADD a little TNT LOVE!! With a phone call to our buds at
TNT, we soon had a Force II TNT kit in route to our shop. After staying up a
couple late nights, we were now ready for some real fun, a little spray!
Once we got the jug all wired in, we took her
for a test lap and realized we were about to murder the 12's! With a mild 150
shot, the car leapt down the 1/4 in the 11's like it was out for a joy ride. Now
it was indeed time for some safety stuff and a little bit of suspension to
corral the ponies.

Back on the THR lift for some DND Suspension!
OK, you decide, stock or Tubular...
Got that right!
Tubular K-Mem in place, and time for some
Lakewoods.

Once we finished the suspension mods and caged
it, it was time to bolt to the annual FFW in Dallas, TX for some True Street
Fun! (A few pics of our booth Sept. 03)

Well, let's just say it was a long weekend.
Without a Scat shield in place nor a battery cut-off the tech guys said see ya...
But with a little persuasion, we had a chance to scavenge the track for the
cut-off and get it mounted. After chasing half the fairgrounds, we found our
parts. Thanks to our pal Chip Haveman for lending some tools, we were back in
line for tech round II! This time, we passed with a warning not to break into
the 11's since we didn't have the scat shield.
Now we knew darn well, we were going deep into
the 11's with the spray, so we tuned the car for the 150 shot and backed the
timing down to mere 8-10 advanced and readied ourselves for a little True Street
Cruise Texas Style! With over 189 cars in the field, it was one of the largest
turn outs for a single class all season long.
Back in the pits, waiting for the call to suit
up and make our passes, we discussed the game plan. Follow the rules for round
one and try not to break into the 11's. We fired up the stang and made a soft
all motor pass. 12.20 @ 112 with only 8-10 degrees advance timing. With a soft
pass just knocking on the door to 11's, we figured what the heck, spray and
pray, and maybe we wouldn't get booted.
After watching nearly 180 cars take their turns
at the 1/4, we were back up and ready to rock. Full tilt this time on the jug
and see what happens. Bang, wheels up launch and 2 more gears later 11.001
lights the board @ 125.6 MPH! All in DOT street trim, full weight, and good 'ol
pump gas! We all wait patiently in expectance of getting the boot... no DICE,
we're cleared for take off and back for another round. I guess with all the
commotion of 180 street cars blasting the 1320, we just got lucky.
Now time to wait again for our turn to shoot
for the ominous 10 sec slip to make the trip all worth while. But it wasn't in
the cards. As the night passes and darkness fell, the track lost its bite and by
round 3 we slipped back to 11.51 at a mid buck twenty something. With hopes for
the Sunday Brackets being better, we all crash out and get ready for the final
day and our last chance for a 10 sec slip before returning to the high desert.
9:01 and we're back at the booth unloading cars
and checking the fuel pressure, timing, tire PSI, and basically crashing to make
this ride go 10's. Lane call goes out and we're up for the last shot. After a
healthy burn out, Alan staged the stang and let it rip. Wheels almost up and a
lot of spinning, we crawl out with a weak 1.67 60 ft and sigh as we think the
chips are down. But with Alan power-shifting the tremec 3550 and spec stage III
like he stole it, we see little LX dance like its on fire. Then, as we think
there might be hope, the car noses over in the last 100 ft. What could've gone
wrong? But wait, the clocks flash a solid 10.90 @ 120 MPH??!! We did it!! 10's
on a budget in DOT and pump gas form.
So what happened? With the weak holeshot and 60
ft, Alan power shifted his way to a top end charge that ran out of gear a mere
100 ft short of the stripe! So rather than scatter a motor, he coasted across
the line and had no idea he had just recorded a True Street 10 sec slip!!
What was impressive is that this little hatch
sported a 10.90 ET on DOT tires, pump gas, and at full weight. What is more
impressive is that this was done with a budget 351 rebuild, an out-of-the-box
set of TFS heads, a 351 EFI intake, and 10:1 compression on pump gas, all
channeled through the stock 28 spline axles!
Now that it has
claimed a 10 sec slip in TRUE "street" trim, it is being rebuilt with some
serious THR heat under the hood and a full Tubular Suspension make-over sporting
the newest front & rear coil over's and Rear Anti-Roll Bar from D&D's line-up.
Look for it to hit the streets again late this fall, but with a vengeance this
time!
Some more pics as
she comes along...STAY TUNED FOR SOME MORE THR ACTION!
