This
was one of my personal rides so we had all kinds of fun with its build. From day
one I have always seemed to be a blue oval fan and the original stangs have
always been a soft spot for me starting with the early Shelby fastbacks. So when
I had the chance to build one for myself, we got out a clean sheet of paper and
started ordering every go-fast resto-mod part we could find.
After shelling out a small fortune we had what seemed like an insurmountable
task of modifications to bring this little pony up to THR speed. Starting with
the paint & body, the car was stripped to the frame and all the metal was
replaced with factory OEM-R skins. In addition we added a Shelby hood, side
scoops, and front valance to dress up the over-all look.
Next came stripping out all the interior, including all the 40 year old
wiring to start from scratch. As you can see, we dropped in a more friendly set
of buckets, a custom cage, rear mounted aluminum fuel cell & battery, and a host
of Autometer gauges as we were planning on monitoring a beastly little V-8. All
the wiring was installed fresh from the blinkers up front to the tailights in
the rear.
As
for the motor, we opted to stick with the original 289 block for originality,
but gave it a thorough overhaul THR style. How bout a 400+ HP pump gas 289! With
a .60 overbore, Forged Pistons, ARP hardware, a set of ExtrudeHoned AFR 165's,
an Aluminum Hi-Rise Edelbrock Single Plane, Demon Carb, CSI Electric Water Pump,
MSD Billet Distributor, Scorpion Billet Roller Rockers, a Custom Grind Hydraulic
Roller Cam, Crane Link Bar Roller Lifters, a Full Length 3" Exhaust, and a
Holley Blue Fuel Pump & Regulator the little V-8 was now ready to rock the
fenders of this Shelby looking fastback!
The next line of business was swapping in a THR Z-Spec T-5 with a Cable Style
Clutch Quadrant Set-Up and a Motorsport 10.5 inch Heavy Duty Clutch. To finish
off the driveline we had a Custom Aluminum Driveshaft made and balanced for the
car. Out back we kept the original 8" Rear but beefed it up with a new Traction
Lok, 4.10's, and new axles sporting NHRA 3" Studs. Also included in the
make-over where all new suspension components including a G-Track Stage II
Suspension Kit with all new springs, a-arms, shocks, struts, sway bars, and poly
bushings.
After
nearly rebuilding the car from the ground up we finished off the brakes with all
new calipers, rotors, and completely new Stainless Steel Brake lines and
Distribution blocks from the new Master Cylinder back to the rear drums. By the
way, this little fastback was an original front disc brake car making it pretty
rare.
I'm sure I have missed some of the many modifications during this build, but
here are a few pics of the project pics we managed to capture during the 8 month
make over. If you have any questions regarding the car or its mods, please feel
free to contact us anytime. We can also build you one just the way you want it
if you like!
